Located on a plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains, Highlands is the 2nd highest incorporated town east of the Mississippi.
The area was originally envisioned as a commercial crossroads and trading center. The physical location was selected after the town’s founders, Clinton Carter Hutchinson & Samuel Truman Kelsey, drew lines from New Orleans to New York and Chicago to Savannah, and assumed the intersection would become a natural location for commerce and trade. Little did they know what mountain oasis they had discovered…
Today, the town has become a bustling mountain community with a vibrant downtown filled with boutique restaurants, shopping, museums, and antique galleries. We’re also a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, offering endless opportunities to hike, mountain bike, horseback ride, fly fish, canoe, and white water raft throughout the surrounding Nantahala National Forest.
We invite you to come experience our slice of heaven : )
